Overview

Tensar® TriAx® geogrid was the first product to be manufactured specifically for the stabilisation of aggregates. Tensar's triaxial geogrids are designed to optimise interlock and confinement, both essential for the control of particle movement, resulting in a stronger, stiffer aggregate layer with increased load spreading capacity and deformation resistance.

With applications in road foundations, pavement layers, rail trackbed and other trafficked areas, incorporating a triaxial geogrid can result in aggregate savings of up to 50%, with the associated benefits of reducing cost, transportation, construction time and emissions.

Product Range

Tensar Triaxial geogrids are available in grades:  TX150, TX160, TX170, and TX190L. TX5 and TX7 grades are also available as a component in full-depth pavement designs.

All geogrids may work; they don’t all work as well.

Tensar triaxial geogrids have been designed specifically for the stabilisation of aggregates in roads, railways and trafficked areas. It has been the subject of extensive researchfull-scale testing and field trials. From the mass of data obtained, design parameters have been developed specific to TriAx and these are incorporated into Tensar’s design software.

Hexagonal Structure with Triangular Apertures.

The geometry of a Tensar triaxial geogrid provides a near-uniform (360°) in-plane stiffness. This has been shown to efficiently distribute the traffic load which acts radially on the stabilised layerLoads are absorbed with very low strain in the geogrid, which results in reduced layer deformation.

Optimised for Interlock and Confinement

Soil stabilisation is achieved by confinement of the aggregate particlesEffective confinement requires a high degree of interlock between aggregate and geogrid and strong junctions in the geogrid, as well as high in-plane stiffness. Tensar triaxial geogrids have been designed to optimise particle confinement, with a combination of 3D rib profile, high junction strength and stiff in-plane geometry.

Reduced Subgrade Stress

The enhanced stiffness and strength of a mechanically stabilised layer incorporating Tensar TriAx geogrid increases load distribution, improving bearing capacity and reducing the stress acting on the subgrade. This in turn reduces subgrade deformation and rutting.

Increased Pavement Life

Pavement life is directly influenced by any deformation of the pavement structure. The particle confinement provided by Tensar TriAx greatly reduces permanent deformation, while the enhanced stiffness of the mechanically stabilised layer influences elastic deformations due to traffic. The result is an increase in pavement life – or alternatively, a possible reduction in pavement thickness for a given design life.
